Located in Sarasota County off the state's western shore, the island beach is a fixture on lists of America's top beaches, a standout even in a state where soft, welcoming sands compose over half the 1,900-kilometre coastline. Using the onset of spring in the region as an excuse to cut loose is nothing new, going back at least to the ancient Greeks and Romans. But spring break as we know it (a holiday period during early spring at American universities and schools) originated in the 1930's, when Fort Lauderdale began welcoming college swim teams for training. While we're looking forward to spring in the northern hemisphere, many in Australia are probably preparing for the end of a bright summer.  The comparatively moderate autumn weather must be a relief for the people down under.  Some will likely greet the change of seasons with a trip to the pool, like the swimmers in this picture of the Bronte Baths, a suburban Sydney pool. While oceanfront swimming pools are not only found in Australia but—  this country is known for its many oceanfront pools that provide sheltered places to swim in places where rocky shorelines and occasional shark attacks can make swimming in the ocean difficult or dangerous.
