Welcome Back, Spring!

Image
Historic nursery land in Emerald Lake Park, Victoria Goodbye, Autumn! It's the start of the March when every brown and dark crevices of the nature begins to turn green. If you are a fan of a bright sky, lush green grass and clear blue water, then its time to get excited as we are going to welcome the first day of SPRING with open arms and warms hugs! (If only we could physically embrace it). Its the time of year when the nature takes a three sixty turn and exhibit its beautiful colors. T here’s no better place to witness that change than here in Emerald Lake Park.   The area of the popular park we’re spotlighting today was originally part of the historic Nobelius Nursery, which started during the 1880s by Carl Axel Nobelius. Because the ground was rich in soil, agricultural and horticultural growth was plentiful (particularly with fruit trees), allowing Nobelius to have 23 employees by 1899. Today, the ‘Nobelius Heritage Park’ manages to preserve a number of histori

Warm Winters And Snowy Alps

Image
Panorama of the Alps under the snow, France Still a little winter! Winter has been very mild this year.  Maybe a little too much.  Snowball battles have become rare and hot chocolates were not as necessary as usual.  Strangely, we are a little disappointed not to have been able to take advantage of this atmosphere so mild in winter, as paradoxical as it is.  Little cocooning warm on Sunday morning when the flakes fall deafly on the ground.  No fogging while exhaling icy winter air. Winter warm  dishes rich in fat and comfort did not really taste the same either this winter.  A bit like drinking a Spritz while it is raining;  it's just not the same. So to compensate, we offer you this splendid view of the Alps under the snow which, we hope will make you feel this winter heat, as there is no  other.  And if you suddenly have a desire for melted Savoyard cheese, you have all our blessing! A Leap On A Leap Day!

Image
A Wallace's flying frog glides to the forest floor It's leap day! For leap day (the extra day added to February every four years), we're looking at a Wallace's flying frog. Also known as parachute frogs, these critters live in the tropical jungles of Malaysia and Borneo. They spend most of their time in trees, gliding down to the ground to mate and lay eggs. They 'fly' by leaping and using their webbed fingers and toes to glide as far as 15 metres. Leap years keep our calendar (the Gregorian calendar) aligned with the Earth's revolutions around the sun. People often refer to a calendar year as a 'trip around the sun', but that trip takes longer than the 365 days of a typical calendar year. It really takes 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 45 seconds. Adding an extra day every four years solves the problem - almost. To keep our calendar mostly synchronised with the astronomical year, some further adjustments need to take place. Years tha

The Timeless Waterway— Otter Creek

Image
Otter Creek in winter in Brandon, Vermont Looking down on the Otter Otter Creek is the longest river entirely contained within the borders of Vermont and has been an important waterway since people settled in the area around 10,000 years ago. Originally an important trade route for the indigenous Abenaki, Algonquin, and Iroquois nations, it remained a vital part of the economy of the early European settlers up through the 19th century. It winds through some of the American Green Mountain state's most scenic towns, from Brandon to Middlebury to Vergennes, and empties into Lake Champlain. It is also the water source for more than one of Vermont’s many microbrew makers, including Otter Creek Brewery. With at least 60 breweries serving just over 600,000 people in the state, Vermonters lead the nation in beer brands per-capita. Cheers! (© Caleb Kenna/Offse)

The Three Musketeers (Polar Bears)

Image
A polar bear sow and her cubs in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge Three cheers for polar bears! February 27 is International Polar Bear Day, an observance created to bring attention to the important role these alpha predators play in the Arctic ecosystem. Though polar bears aren’t endangered - their current conservation status is ‘vulnerable’ - these magnificent beasts have become a sort of mascot for the race to slow the melting of Arctic sea ice. The Arctic ice is crucial to the bear's survival, as they hunt the ringed seals that bob up through holes in the ice. As Arctic ice decreases, the polar bear's hunting ground does too. A leafy seadragon in the waters off Wool Bay, Australia Australia’s southern coast is leafy seadragon territory, so it’s the place to go if you want to see the camouflaged critter in its native habitat. This amazing specimen was photographed near Wool Bay. The leafy seadragon has evolved to resemble seaweed as a way to fool predators. It’s a relative of the seahorse, but isn’t quite the swimmer that its cousin is, so the camouflage gives it a big advantage. (© Alex Mustard/Minden Pictures)

Wish Carrying Horses

Image
Pilgrims throwing wind horses into the air above Ganden Monastery for the New Year in Tibet, China Wind horses carry wishes for a new year For the first day of Losar, or the Tibetan New Year, we're paying a visit to these Buddhist pilgrims at the Ganden Monastery in Lhasa, Tibet. Losar is celebrated for 15 days, but most events occur in the first three days. They include wishing family members a prosperous year, praying at monasteries or temples, exchanging gifts, burning incense, chanting, wrestling, horse racing, and more. Celebrations for the new year end with Chotrul Duchen, or the Butter Lamp Festival. The pilgrims in this image are releasing prayer flags called 'wind horses' or lungtas, a ritual they perform during Losar and during the rest of the year as well. Upon releasing the prayer flags, the pilgrims ask the mountain deity to 'increase their fortune like the galloping of a horse and expand their prosperity like the boiling over of milk'. ( ©

During his reign in the latter sixteen hundreds, Shivaji had both alliances and disputes with Moghul rulers. Capturing many forts and building many others, he is also remembered for his impressive naval fleet, the first of its kind in the Maratha empire. The Great Temple's Solar Alignment— Abu Simbel

Image
The interior of the Great Temple of Ramesses II, Abu Simbel, Egypt. It's not always sunny in Abu Simbel… …but when it is, it's pretty spectacular. This tiny lakeside settlement's Great Temple of Ramesses II was positioned on the orders of that powerful pharaoh so the inner sanctum (in this picture, that's the small room at the very back) is lit by the sun only twice a year. On February 22 and October 22 (thought to be Ramesses' coronation and birth dates, respectively), the first light of dawn illuminates the sanctuary and three statues within: one of Ramesses, one of the sun god Ra, and one of the chief god Amun. A fourth statue depicting the underworld figure Ptah is permanently shrouded in shadow. The temple is one of a pair resting on the man-made Lake Nasser's shores, the other honouring the pharaoh's wife Nefertari. When the Nile was dammed to create the lake in the 1960s, the whole complex was painstakingly moved to higher ground. While it

Rio Mundo— A Timeless Journey

Image
Source of the Mundo River, Sierra de Alcaraz, Albacete. The birth of the Rio Mundo is a show that you should not miss.  This tributary of the Segura sprouts hidden in the Albacete mountain range of Alcaraz thanks to an underground aquifer of karst origin that emerges abruptly and is then torn up by a cliff of almost 300 meters.  This is what we show you today in our photograph and it is between the towns of Vianos and Riopar, in the natural park of the Calares del Mundo and Sima.  If you want to go see it, you should know that in the nearest car park there is only room for 100 cars and on weekends it is usually crowded, so early in the morning if you do not want to queue. The River Mundo is not named for the noun "world" of the Latin "mundus", but for the adjective of the same language that means "clean", as opposed to "unclean."  Its groundwater flows from a cave that is still to be explored, since to date only 30 kilometers of the 60

London Fashion Week And Little Old Ruff

Ruff (Philomachus pugnax) male for London Fashion Week. This male ruff is catwalk-ready in his lavish plumage, designed to catch the eye of admiring females (who are much more modestly dressed). The males' flamboyant collars come in black, white, ginger, stripy and plain varieties which, along with their head tufts, help them compete for attention as they strut their stuff during breeding season. These wading birds breed in river meadows and coastal marshes from northern Europe to Siberia and can be spotted on the east and south coasts of the UK. They are usually passing through en route to African wetlands although some will over-winter here.
