Callanish Stones

The Callanish Stones, Isle of Lewis, at sunset. The 5,000 years old Callanish Stones are standing tall in the west coast of Lewis, Scotland.   The monoliths rows stretch in a form of a circle. ultimately  shape into a rudimentary cross. The center  is occupied with a tomb which is guarded by these stones. The 12 feet tall mysterious Lewisian Gneiss have yet to reveal their secret. The fictional Craigh na Dun from the famous series Outlander is inspired by the Callanish Stones of Isle of Lewis. The site of the stones is open for the visitors and people come here and touch these stones to know the tales behind them. You will hear a number of tales about the stones whenever you have a chance to visit them.

Dongzhi 2019: Chinese Winter Solstice The winter solstice festival was originated from the Han Dynasty (202 BC – 220 AD) and thrived in the Tang and Song dynasties (618 - 1279). People in the old times attached great importance to the festival. In Han Dynasty, the festival is regarded as the Winter Festival and people had one day off for the holiday. The winter festival, Dongzhi also known as Chinese Winter Solstice, starts from December 21st and ends at 23rd of the same month. This festival is celebrated in China, Korea, Vietnam and Japan.  The reason why the Chinese people celebrate the Winter solstice is related to the theory of Yin and Yang. According to the Chinese astrology, Yang symbolizes masculine and positive, Yin has the opposite meanings. The ancient people think from the winter solstice, the Yin is at its peak and will disappear gradually. While the Yang or positive things will become stronger and stronger from the day. Unlike other butterflies the monarchs are delicate and couldn't resist winter so they gather the clues from the changing weather and prepare themselves for a long migration. They know when is the time to travel to south from the harsh winter of north.  They use thermals and air currents to make their trek smooth and to survival such a long journey in spite of bring such a fragile creature. Some estimate that these monarchs can travel about 3,000 miles to escape death and starvation of winter.  Well !!! Here is an excellent example for those who couldn't fight and survive the crisis when they were strong enough to hold their own bargain. Just take a look at the monarchs and you will find your inspiration.

The Continental army which was led by George Washington had a deep relation with this landscape and you may hear the mythical but inspirational stories of American history about Valley Forge. Washington and his army faced severe cold, illness, devastation and death here but due to the heroic presence, constant and persistent working of George Washington, the army turned into the invincible force and he himself came out to be the most powerful and respected leader among his peers.

The eight gigantic pillars stand tall and represent the ancient tales of gods and imperial period. The mythical Saturn is one of the pioneer figure of Roman Religion. He was worshiped and adorned in the 5th BC in a festival called Saturnalia which started at 17th December and lasted for many days. It was the most joyous festivals among the others as it provided freedom to the slaves, people wore informal clothes instead of toga wears and then there were partying and merrymaking thing that made it different.

Icelandic sheep   In western countries, most children believe in a friendly Santa Claus who arrives on Christmas Eve but there are Icelandic kids who anticipate the arrival of the Yule Lads. The 13 mischievous troll like characters who live somewhere up in the mountains. Sheep-Cote Clod is the first Yule lad who comes down the town to award the well behaving children with treat at the evening of December 12. One by one, the yule lads start to arrive in the town till December 24.  Beginning on the evening of December 11 Icelandic kids will happily put their shoes out on the window sill, hoping for a nice treat. But the kids with bad manners will wake up to a potato.     Icelandic kids have heard the story of the Yule Lads. That tale has been started to descend from the year 1932.
